my husband absolutely loves brunch, and if he could we would be at locanda verde or prune every weekend. of course, given that we have two little kids and a zillion activities that’s not really reality so we have to make do with brooklyn. when we have time, we head to frankies 457 (pretty nice french toast), or have sandwiches at bklyn larder, but if we’re stuck in park slope, we’re left with some pretty measly options (we are so very tired of stone park cafe, which i was never that enamored with in the first place). fortunately, we’ve now found not only an interesting spot with fonda, but one that is not that traditional brunch either, and that makes me much happier.
first off, the guacamole is a must. done in that now ubiquitous rosa mexicano style, it’s as good as ever — freshly made, spicy, creamy with chunks of avocado. the chips are crisp and light too. another local spot, maria’s mexican bistro, does pretty decent guacamole also, but i think that fonda’s has the edge. for brunch, fonda’s has the basics like a burger or french toast, and if you have not properly trained kids they’ll happily pander and serve bland quesadillas. if you are in the mood for something different, something spicy, and something delicious, fonda also has dishes like the creamy pasilla chilaquiles. while i wasn’t crazy about the crispy tortillas (they seemed a little soft too me), the sauce had a zing which melded perfectly with the medium rare steak and the tomatillo sauce. j. had a mexican take on eggs benedict which i’m sorry to report i seem to have lost my notes on, but he was a very very happy clam and this is a guy who prefers the bistro every time.
we’ve also been to fonda for dinner which is good too. some of the highlights have been the enchilada suizas (maybe it’s that magical pasilla sauce) and the pork adobo. i don’t know that i would send you here from manhattan, or even from williamsburg, but if you’re in south brooklyn, and want good, friendly service along with something that is not quite brunch, i’d send you to fonda’s for sure. fonda: 434 7th avenue between 14th and 15th streets, brooklyn, new york, .
