holiday shopping: midtown and uptown manhattan

xmas bryant ribbon

here’s part two of my four part series on where to go shopping in new york for the holidays.   this post is focused on midtown and uptown, and sorry everyone but i just couldn’t come up with enough great spots on the upper west side for ideas (though new york magazine had some good suggestions).    earlier today i put together some ideas for downtownand next friday i’ll be covering brooklyn (south and north).  and starting on monday, i’ll be rolling out some gift guides too for those homebound.

xmas bryant park

midtown:

museum of arts and design: i still haven’t been but the reports on the shop are good. i just have to get over what has happened to my beloved lollipop building2 columbus circle at broadway, midtown, .

takashimaya: absolutely beautiful things. most are priced exhorbitantly but there are some finds and the wrapping is exquisite.  693 5th avenue between 55th and 54th streets, midtown, .

lee’s art shop: great art supply shop as well as some home design (we get all our light fixtures there). kind of like a more interesting kate’s paperie, and more affordable too.  220 west 57th street between broadway and 7th avenue, midtown, .

xmas time warner

craft fairs in midtown:

holiday market at columbus circle: i’ve never been to this market so don’t know how it is, but the time warner center is always reliable (j. crew, williams-sonoma, thomas pink).  an excellent choice for very last minute gifts, especially with kids in tow, and they do have a mxyplyzyk pop-up as an added bonus.  outside columbus circle/time warner building. runs through december 24th.

the holiday shops at bryant park:  more than 100 boutiques and artisans and some food too (nothing spectacular on the food front but satisfying treats).   surrounding the ice rink at bryant park.  off 42nd street and 6th avenue, runs from now through january 3, 2010.

grand central holiday fair:  have to say that i was not thrilled when i went by this week.  not so stylish or interesting so this would be my last resort place. at grand central station,  42nd street and lexington, midtown, runs every day from now through december 24th.

just a few chains:  the same as my downtown post, just in midtown in case you’re nearby.

anthropologie: rockefeller center, .

mujithe new york times building, 620 8th avenue at 40th street, ;

kate’s paperie: 140 west 57th street between 6th and 7th avenues, .

xmas enchanted

uptown:  all my ideas are on the upper east side.

the conran shop: fantastic british design store with all sorts of great ideas.  i believe they have a new more affordable collection called well considered (please don’t judge them by their naming skills) that i definitely want to check out.  407 east 59th street, .

roberta roller rabbit:  great graphic prints from india on all sorts of textiles including quilts, baby blankets, totes and even hats. 1019 lexington avenue at 73rd street, .

enchanted:  one of the best classic toy stores around.  1179 lexington avenue at 80th street, .

e.a.t. gifts: the littlest of things can be found in here.  1062 madison avenue at 80th street, .

neue galerie:  for wrapping paper, tableware and textiles. 1048 5th avenue at 86th street, .

the shop at cooper hewitt: for any design aficionado, this is the place. 2 east 91st street off of 5th avenue, .

blue tree: phoebe cates kline’s well curated shop full of something for everyone at all price points.  1283 madison avenue at 92nd street, .
