al di la: a swimmingly good local italian

al di là has really been written up everywhereso i am just including it here for future reference and in case you find yourself in brooklyn for the day.  i would also say this is one of my top three south brooklyn restaurant picks.  al di  là is really an excellent affordable destination for dinner and just recently they started serving lunch too both during the week and on weekends (don’t expect traditional brunch food).    given that we live less than 10 blocks away, we have eaten here numerous times and we’re always over-the-top happy with the food and the service.   i stick to the excellent handmade pasta dishes. i recently had the ravioli filled with squash and served with browned butter and sage and we cannot seem to get enough of the tagliatelle served with a beef, pork and veal ragú.

al di  là also serves rabbit, hangar steak, baby chicken and some fish, and these entrees change a bit over time, and they often have one or two specials. our lunch treat is the uova affogate al pomodoro or the eggs drowning in tomatoes and cheese which is so rich and buttery that we used up the entire bread basket to soak up those juices.  al di  là also has a great, affordable wine list with a few wines by the glass that i always want to try out.   while it’s not kid-focused (there is no separate menu), they have always been gracious about accommodating our tots and giving them some plain pasta if required.  my only caveats are that you either must come for lunch, eat early or not care about how long you have to wait because they don’t take reservations and there is always, always a line after 6 p.m.     al di là, 248 fifth avenue at carroll street, brooklyn, new york, .
