cog & pearl: handmade has a “go to” brooklyn shop

i have a few “go to” shops when i don’t necessarily know what i want to get but i know that i will find something at these stores.  i will post about these periodically but want to start with one close to home and where i have bought so many things for so many kinds of people it is hard to keep count.  cog and pearl is one of the best edited, most interesting, easily affordable and excellent store i can think of along that highly trafficked and well worn strip of park slope’s 5th avenue row.  run by kristin overson and seth walter, this tiny shop always has a cute rack of clothes/purses/wallets, some super sweet necklaces and other jewelry, and a wide range of ceramic and other artistic handmade goods.  while they enabled my john derian decoupage addiction, they also showcase more unusual, lesser known artists.   though cog and pearl now has a good website, hanging out in their space is the best way to get a sense of their unique point of view.  cog and pearl, 190 fifth avenue at sackett street, brooklyn, new york, .

i totally agree with LL on this one, even though i have only been once or twice! i have yet to find something comparable here in london… and it turned me into another Derian fan, very hard to get here!!! must keep looking :)

[...] as i have been on the hunt for great little independent shops all over new york, i was surprised to keep hearing that there is this one must see place on the upper east side.  and, well, i used to live up there (way to the east but still technically the upper east side) andi cannot remember once finding a home/design/clothing shop that had the kind of interesting, artsy and intriguing mix that i have come to find in brooklyn with some regularity (think cog and pearl).  [...]
