i know i’m not supposed to admit this, but there are definitely days when i crave manhattan — the energy, the architectural diversity and the style of so many people. i also just miss the discovery of spot-on clothing stores that seem to appear out of nowhere. i used to roam around new york quite a bit but, now that i’m out in the “boroughs” that does not happen as often. so i was truly thrilled when one of my all time favorite east village haunts a. cheng opened up in brooklyn a half-mile from where i live. designer alice cheng, in my not very expert opinion, creates phenomenal dresses, skirts, sweaters, blouses and pants. using only the finest fabrics and materials, she crafts really perfect outfits with a sense of pattern, color and style, and the fact that they are reasonably priced is an added bonus. her designs are fun and great for work outings as well as weekend wear. this winter i am especially coveting her elsie sweater coat which seems just about perfect in this 20 degree weather. a. cheng also features a highly-edited roster of other designers. there are dresses from saja, accessories from antik batik and kit+lili and wallets by abas wallets. i highly recommend a regular visit to this excellent spot. a. cheng, 152 fifth avenue between douglas and degraw streets, brooklyn, new york, 718.783.2826.
